About
Kuppi in Sinhala and Tamil refers to a light, a small oil lamp, a vial. On Sri Lankan campuses, kuppi is the figurative term for a student-led informal study group in which a senior student or one of the “smarter” ones, leads the discussion on a topic. Kuppi for us is a politics of pedagogy and performance.
In early 2021 in the midst of the pandemic and lockdowns, a group, working in educational institutes and concerned about the state of education in Sri Lanka, came together to build a forum where we could engage with the rest of the public on vital concerns of politics, economics, society, education. As a collective we are committed to bringing about social change and to building a violence free environment for our people. We are especially committed to fostering free education and to questioning the narrow and debilitating discourse of nationalism that dominates mainstream thinking.
